Carolyn Carney is an “Army Brat” originally born in Panama City, Panama. She and her little brother grew up throughout the U.S. east coast and Western Europe: He played football, she played futbol, and they studied Taekwondo and Panamanian folk dancing.
At 16, while living in Colorado Springs, Carolyn caught the hip hop bug. She found Keri Herman at Synergy Dance Academy and trained with her for three years–only stopping to attend Colorado College. An “urban exploration” class landed Carolyn in Chicago, and the experience left her wanting more. After a few false starts, she transferred to Roosevelt University and made Chicago home. In the process, she has earned many names and has grown with many people. Known as Natural1, GoldGrrl, and Calamity, Carolyn is officially affiliated with the groups Awesome Style Konnection, Robot Mafia, and Erzulie.
