Bboy Swellz Interview 8-25-15

Bboy Swellz (Chai Saetern) was born July 16th, ‘87 right outside the refugee camps of Thailand. Just barely turning one, Swellz and his family were sponsored by his uncle to move to Sacramento, CA in ‘88. Although life was rough growing up in the toughest neighborhoods in Sacramento during the 80’s, Swellz was introduced to Hip-Hop culture to avoid crime and violence at a very young age. Due to his older brother Kao Saetern who hung around Breaker’s and Graffiti writers, which gave Swellz the advantage to learn the sub culture. From hitting up practices with his brother, to writing graffiti, and recording music, occasionally.

Although Swellz initially didn’t start breaking until 2001 at the age of fourteen. Breaking came to him very natural! Swellz played soccer, football, and wrestling all throughout middle school and high school, which gave him the upper hand to excel. Though breaking wasn’t easy, his courage and passion drove him to take it professionally across country, along with working for professional NBA teams like the Sacramento Kings and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Swellz sooner than later found out that this was not just a street dance anymore; yet it became very real to him that this was going to be a lifestyle and possibly a career! From doing it in his living room to performing at Redbull Bcone Cypher San Deigo, CA. Swellz also went on to battle at world renown BBoy events like; Evolution 2 (Orlando, FL), BBoy Massacre (NYC, NY), All The Way Live! (Bay Area, CA), Show Me Styles (St. Louis, MO), Wanted (Denver, CO), King Of Sac (Sac, CA), Freestylesession 11 (Los Angeles, CA). Now, Swellz is more of an instructor and a judge for breaking events. Every so often, Swellz will enter bigger events with his crew back home “Fallen Kings” whom of which are world class bboys and dancers like Morris, Kareem, Dtrix, and Dereleek! Swellz’s breaking crew has gone around the world and back while some members are featured on “America’s Best Dance Crew” MTV, Battle Of The Year, and Youtube. Swellz is no expert at this art, but loves to challenge himself and enjoy the culture along the way. Tune in to Powerstyle Radio to hear more about Swellz!
