Last night’s interview with King Shocka Zulu was like traveling back in time. The deep stories of what they experienced as performers and competitors sounded very parallel to what some of us have experienced today. Kings of Chicago’s West side they also traveled to compete with other dance crews. This flyer above was a photo from their competition in Alberta, Canada in 1983 where according them, they competed against crews from New York, Detroit, California, and so on. A correction on the flyer, they were known as Tidal Wave dancers, NOT Tidal Wave Breakers because they had about 9 members that were breakers, poppers, lockers, and other styles. They just loved to dance! Now a part of Universal Zulu Nation they are giving back to the community by putting events and programs together for the youth so also can have more outlets to express themselves.
